The Central Arizona Association of Governments (CAAG) is under contract with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to provide various transportation planning activities throughout Gila and Pinal Counties. This includes development of a Five-Year Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), monitoring local project development, input into the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), Transportation Enhancements Projects, Federal reporting, and various Transit Programs. CAAG has also been active in the development of several Small Area Transportation Studies in the Region.
The Transportation Director acts as liaison to ADOT for each member entity of CAAG. This includes Technical Assistance with ADOT transportation and transit programs as well as attending training classes and workshops and disseminating this information to member entities. The Director also represents the Region at State Transportation Board Meetings and the Transportation Enhancement Review Committee.
CAAG has a standing Transportation Technical Advisory Committee comprised of one representative from each member entity and one designated staff member from ADOT. This Committee makes recommendations to the Regional Council relating to the TIP and STIP. They also provide technical advice to the Regional Council on many transportation and transit issues.
CAAG also administers and coordinates two public transit programs for ADOT. The 5310 Program provides vans for elderly and disabled programs, both public and private. The 5311 Program provides funding for public transit systems.
