CAAG is the designated water quality planning agency for the Region. CAAG’s staff works with representatives from local agencies and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to develop and, in some cases, implement specific projects and programs aimed at preserving or improving water quality.
This is accomplished through the administration of the CAAG Section 208 Areawide Water Quality Managment Plan (AWWQMP). This plan was deveoped in 1978, shortly after CAAG received Designated Planning Agency status from the State of Arizona. The plan, written to uphold Section 208 of the Clean Water Act dictates a public process for new wastewater treatment facilities and the expansion or change to existing facilities. The AWWQMP has become a significant document in the region, documenting and providing a public forum for water and wastewater treatment in the region.
Those that are required to file an amendment to the CAAG AWWQMP should note that the process may take anywhere from 6-12 months.
CURRENT CAAG 208 REVIEW IN PROGRESS
The Town of Marana is proposing two amendments to the CAAG Areawide Water Quality Management Plan. The amendments will address the establishment of a Designated Management Agency (DMA) boundary for the Town of Marana and the construction of the North Pinal WRF and the County Line WRF that are currently in the planning stages within Pinal County. Below are links for the “Affidavit of Publication” for the public hearing notice, the DMA information packet submittal, and the final draft of the 208 plan amendment for the wastewater reclamation facilities. As part of its commitment to serve the water education needs of Arizona citizens, the Water Resources Research Center teamed up with the Water Education Foundation to produce the Layperson’s Guide to Arizona Water. The publication meets a longstanding need: it offers in a single, reader-friendly source information Arizona citizens need to be well informed about state water issues. Few would doubt the need for a layperson’s guide or primer describing the ins and outs of Arizona water. Arizona is a rapidly growing state attracting people from many different areas who need to be educated about water in a desert and semi-arid environments.
The guide is aimed at a wide audience, from water professionals needing a quick reference, to policy makers wanting a reliable summary of the facts, to the water-interested citizen. The guide is available as a free public service online, or a hard copy can be purchased from the Water Education Foundation, 717 K St., Suite 317, Sacramento, CA 95814; phone: 916-444-6240; web site: www.watereducation.org ($10 per copy; $7 for ten or more copies.)
